hi guys !

integrating a random image into the sidebar of my site which points into the gallery works fine. i can constrain the size to the maximum allowed width through configuration. however, it would be great if the hight were fixed, too. i.e. i want to have square random images, just as the thumbnails are.

is there a setting / easy change in code which accomplishes this?

No - this is not implemented. You would have to extend this by yourself.
