First question:

I have a TWG1.5.5 installation where i use a root.txt files.
Main gallery
Subgallery A
Event A
-Pictures jpg's
-root.txt
Event B
-Pictures jpg's
-root.txt
Subgallery B
Event C
-Pictures jpg's
-root.txt
Event D
-Pictures jpg's
-root.txt
Etc.

So i can use one installation of TWG for more companies (in this case mostly bars). Put i link in their website to the gallery and open a new window to show the choosen album. Because of the root.txt they cannot go back i see the pictures of the other bars. Works fine, except when i link to the picture directory i see the thumbnail, clicking on the thumbnail brings me to the bigger image and the thumbnail row. Now there is not a way back to the thumbnails, because the little green button "To the overview" has also dissapeared. Is there a solution for this??
See: #removed_broken_link

Second question:
can i update from 1.5.5. to 1.6 without doing a new installation??

first - no - but this should not work like this - I have to check this ;).
You should be able to get back ....

Second: full install! - read howto 23 how to update.

what is in your root.txt? because if is should be a root then you have to have the directory name in there.

not right ;) - check the howto again - the root directory has to be in there because this whole thing works recursive too and then I don't know where the "real" root is ;).

that's actually not important for you ;). It's because of an internal detection I do. "real" is the new root you want to have.

If you have the root.txt in the folder e.g. eventA then put eventA in the root.txt
