When I hide the thumbnail page the up button is also hidden.
$skip_thumbnail_page = true;

Is this how it is supposed to work or is this a bug?
Maybe I have missconigured something...

I want the up button to be there otherwise it becomes to hard for the end user to get back/up again.

This feature is designed like that - problem is the the up button does always go to the thumbs page - this is why it is not there.

I have designed the whole thing that you should click on the left upper navigation to go back to the main site.
But it seem you have removed the text from the language file?

I would put something like "back" or even an icon if you like in the language file. Then you can navigate back without any problems.
