I am creating a website for a landscaping company. They want their customers to be able to upload pictures to us so that their home can be featured on the website. (I will add them to a slideshow after I receive them). We will not know of all the customers, who will want to upload pictures of their landscaping. So, we do not know what users to set up.

Is there a way that they can register through the Joomla site we have built and it automatically set them up to upload the pictures?

Sure. You have 2 options.

You can create a profile for all users on a page thas is only available for registered users.
or you use the master profile. The setup is like above but you select master mode in the profile. Then a directory for each user is created as subdirectory of the folder you specify.
You can even work with groups where you could specify different profiles which are selected depending on the login.

first question - should all users upload to the same folder oder should each get his own one?
